HOLT COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL ANNOUNCES GRANT AWARD, SUMMER CONCERTS LINE-UP
Holt -- Summer is just around the corner, and the Holt Community Arts Council is ready. As they have since 2007, the Arts Council will present Music in the Garden, a series of free concerts in Veterans Memorial Gardens. Once again, the music will be funded in part by a mini-grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Arts Council of Greater Lansing.
“Variety and quality are key when we choose bands for Music in the Garden,” said Evan Hope, who has volunteered to organize the concerts since their start.
“The Holt Community Arts Council is still able to bring something new to the community, and that is something that is really important to our organization,” said President Sara Reedy.
The sounds of Texas and Mexico are part of what’s new to Music in the Garden this year. Karizma leads the series with their July 7 show. Originally from the Holland, Michigan, area and currently based in west Michigan, the bilingual band plays original and cover tunes in Conjunto and Tejano, the lively folk traditions of southern Texas and northern Mexico.
On July 14, local favorites the Sea Cruisers return with their fun repertoire of popular hits from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s.
Also new this year is Motor City Soul, a Detroit septet that features Motown sounds along with funk, soul, and blues. The group includes three talented lead singers with rich backgrounds in gospel and rock, as well as funk, soul, blues, and R & B. Various members of the band have played with internationally known recording artists, such as the Temptations, the Four Tops, and Rare Earth, and gospel legend, the Rev. James Cleveland. Motor City Soul takes the stage on July 21.
To round out the season, Zion Lion returns with the sounds of the islands. On July 28, this Kalamazoo-based group with international roots will play reggae, calypso, and the diverse sounds of Latin America and Africa.
“Everyone loves Music in the Garden, and we are happy to give this to our community,” said Kara Hope, current vice president and founding past president of the Holt Community Arts Council.
While the concerts are free to the public, they are not free to produce. In addition to the minigrant, support comes from contributions from local businesses, individuals, Delhi Charter Township, and the Delhi Township Downtown Development Authority.
All shows begin at 7 p.m. Veterans Memorial Gardens is located directly behind Delhi Township Hall, 2074 Aurelius Road, Holt. For more information or to contribute to Music in the Garden, visit holtarts.org or find the Holt Community Arts Council on Facebook.
